Catoosa Class of ’83 Yearbook Photos

Catoosa Class of ’83 Yearbook Photos. After looking through old yearbooks with a high school chum a few weeks back, and considering that my 20-year reunion is coming up this summer, I decided that it would be neat to have some yearbook photos available online. I started scanning in our senior photos, but decided that I could do better than just a basic scan of each page. What I wanted was to have all the pictures like they are in the yearbooks, but also give the viewer the opportunity to see how many of these people they can remember. It’s not a quiz actually, but you can look at someone’s photo and then hold your mouse over it to get a pop-up message with their name. Click here to see who you remember..

Computer-Rebuild Weekend

antec_slk2600_case.jpg (33393 bytes)Computer-Rebuild Weekend. I finally bit the bullet and bought all the parts needed to rebuild my destroyed computer. The motherboard I got is an excellent Asus model with lots of good stuff built-in to replace various fried components. The CPU is just a bit faster than my previous one (XP 2200+ vs. XP1700+) and I ended up with another brand of video card, but with the same GeForce4 Ti 4200 chipset I had before. I bought two 256MB PC2700 DDR RAM modules. The old ones were PC2100, so there’s another slight speedup. I’ve only bought one 80GB HD so far, but those are getting real cheap and I’ll get more storage space soon. Craziest of all, is that I also bought a DVD burner! More on this as I get more experience with it. (I also need to update the hardware page with all these new parts.)

The weekend was spent not only putting my new system together, but also putting both Holly’s system and the HTPC into different cases. Previously, in the futile hope that a new power supply was all I would need to get my computer back up and running, I had purchased a new case and power supply from Fry’s. The case was a nice-looking bronze case (pictured here) and it had a quiet power supply, so it became the new home of the HTPC. It’s not nearly as conspicuous next to the rest of the home theater equipment as the old beige case was (new photos coming soon).

After transferring the guts of the HTPC into this new case, there were still a few jobs left to do. Andrew was at a sleepover with a friend, so it was time for some father-daughter geek-out bonding. Holly was very happy to help in moving the HTPC’s old, loud power supply to my PC’s case. She enjoyed that screwdriver work so much that we decided it would be a good time to get rid of her junky old PC case and move her PC guts into the old HTPC case. She did all the work of removing her power supply and installing it in the new-to-her case. I had to do the motherboard transfer, but she helped install the hard drives, floppy drive, and CD-ROM. Basically, every screw in her PC, she put in herself. She did an excellent job!

Computer Disaster

Computer Disaster. There was a power outage yesterday, and the electricity came back on, my computer was destroyed.  Read way more than you want to know about it here.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year. Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated the page. (I blame Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for stealing all my free time.) Now I have finally put together a gallery of Christmas 2002 photos. Not as many photos as last year (we kinda forgot to get the camera out while opening presents in Oklahoma).

In other news, Andrew got a Playstation 2 for Christmas. So much for all my research and why I think an Xbox is superior. But it was from Santa, and you can’t argue with him. We also got several new Xbox and PS2 games both for Christmas, and at Blockbuster’s “buy-two-get-one-free” previously played games sale. Check back soon for an update to our Xbox page, a new PS2 page, and/or a new Xbox vs. PS2 page.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Review

Score 9.6/10

Graphics: 9 Sound: 10 Gameplay: 9 Value: 10 Tilt: 10

(Using Gamespot’s rating system (Graphics, Sound, Gameplay, Value, Reviewer’s Tilt)

This is simply the greatest video game ever created. There’s still room for improvement, but so far, this is the best.

I loved GTA3 on the PC, and often while playing Vice City on the PS2, I’ll find myself wishing that it, too was on the PC. I had gotten totally spoiled by 1280×1024 resolution on a 19″ monitor in GTA3. ~640×480 on a 50 inch screen is comparatively fuzzy. Maybe this is the incentive I need to finally go HDTV. Even though I’d rather be playing it on a PC, that won’t happen for several months yet. So right now for GTA:VC, the PS2 is the only way to play. And play I have! I’m almost embarrassed about the number of hours I’ve logged playing this thing. (Probably more than my top 2 Xbox games combined.) It is the epitome of addictive. The open-ended, non-linear gameplay means that if you’re having trouble with a certain mission, you don’t put the game down and come back to it later, you just avoid that particular mission for a while and go do some jobs for a different scumbag boss, or play any of the myriad of side-missions like Vigilante Mode, Taxi Driver, Stunt Driving, the Rampages, or just explore for Hidden Packages, or Unique Jumps. The things to do are nearly endless. I am truly amazed at the scope of this game. The number of characters, vehicles, weapons, missions, and just the size of the city are staggering. Is this really that much better than GTA3? Oh yes. The motorcycles are a blast to ride and are probably my favorite improvement. The airplanes and helicopters, both real ones and bomb-dropping, remote-controlled toys are super-cool. You can while away quite a bit of playing time just flying over the city and taking it all in. Indoor locations (and being able to hold them up) add an interesting variation. You also have the ability to buy property and after completing the location’s required missions, have it generate more income for you. Finally something to spend your hard-earned fake money on. I don’t have DTS on my receiver to enjoy the surround sound that this game offers, but the voice acting and 80s music soundtrack are so excellent that I have to rate the sound a “10”. There’s nothing wrong with the engine, weapon, and ambient sound effects in normal stereo, but I’d sure like to experience them on DTS someday. As far as controlling the game goes, I got used to it pretty quickly, but that “spoiled by GTA3 on the PC” syndrome really kicks in when I get in a gunfight with multiple assailants or when I want to do some zooming and sniping. The mouse control on the PC is pretty much perfect. I was really used to switching between my Wingman Rumblepad while driving and my mouse/keyboard controls while on the street. I don’t really know how they could improve the control much when using the PS2 controller, so I can’t complain too much, but maybe the developers could take some notes on how Halo does it on the Xbox. What about the adult-ness of the game? Well, If GTA3 was the equivalent of PG-13 movie, this one is almost rated R. I don’t mean you should expect to see full frontal nudity, cartoon sex, or anything like that (though a strip club and an adult movie studio are featured), but the humor is more “adult” and some of the missions involve worse things than just driving dancing girls to the policeman’s ball or picking up girlie-mags from the street. Even the radio DJs use more “blue” language, and the pedestrians and drivers you deal with curse much worse. Honestly, it’s nothing you wouldn’t hear in a PG-13 movie, but I personally preferred GTA3’s clever, suggestive style over VC’s let-it-all-hang-out “adult” language and situations. I think it takes more creativity to be funny without 4-letter words, and that it’s lazy writing to just toss them in. It may be more realistic for people you’re terrorizing in the streets to let the expletives fly, but I sure preferred GTA3’s way of doing things in that area. I recently told a friend who had just purchased an Xbox that he had made the right choice in picking it over the PS2. Knowing him to be a fan of GTA3 on the PC, I said that GTA:VC was excellent, but not worth $250 (console+game). I’m nearly tempted to go back on that. If a game’s worth is measured by how much time you spend enjoying it, $50 for the game is one of the world’s best entertainment bargains. Is it worth buying a PS2 just to play this one game? Well, for normal working-class Joes like me, that’d be awfully tough to justify, but as I’ve said previously, if you can afford both an Xbox and a PS2, I highly recommend it. If you can wait a few months for it to come out on the PC (and your PC is powerful enough), that’s another fine way to go, but whatever you do, you’ve got to play this game.

Fast Healer. Well, it’s two weeks later and Andrew’s wound is doing really well. The photo on the right is the “2 Weeks Later” shot. On the left is a composite of 3 images of the scar:1) The night of the injury, 2) One week later, and 3) Two weeks later. Click for a larger version if you’ve got the guts.

Now it can be told
. Last Thursday, Andrew had an accident at school. The gym class was playing football, but not  in the smartest location on the school grounds, because there happened to be a light-pole along the side of their field. Andrew was running, looking back over his shoulder trying to catch a pass. He turned to face forward right before he smacked into the light-pole and gave himself a pretty gruesome gash on his forehead. It was more of a “rupture” than a “laceration”, and judging by his clothes and shoes, it was very bloody.

Coincidentally, his mom happened to be heading into the school for a conference when she was told, “Don’t go into the office. Some kid in there is hurt pretty bad.” “Who is it?”, she asked, noticing the trail of blood leading to the door. “Some fifth-grader named Andrew.” Well, even though there’s more than one fifth grader named Andrew, Michelle’s worst fears were soon confirmed. An on-campus doctor had gotten him bandaged up well enough to travel to the emergency room. Michelle drove him there and that’s where I met up with them. (Thanks for the lift, Joey.)

Though I’ve had a history of some pretty bizarre injuries myself, I’m sorry to say that when they unwrapped his forehead, it was the worst looking wound I’ve ever seen in real life. To preserve Andrew’s handsomeness, Michelle asked that a plastic surgeon be brought in at the very beginning, to make sure he got the best stitch-up job possible. The doctor did a great job and Andrew was unbelievably brave. He’s only 10, but he never shed a tear at any point during the ordeal. Through the waiting, cleaning, anesthesia injections, stitching, and several bandage changes by us, he has been a real champ.

Apparently, “never shed a tear” can’t be said for several of his friends who saw the accident happen or even just heard about it. Andrew had a few choked up messages waiting for him on the answering machine when he finally got home.

The next day, he stayed home from school, but Michelle did take him in at the end of the day to pick up his homework. It was about the same time of day as the accident had occurred, and his class was again in gym. He went over to say “Hi” and he was immediately swarmed by all his friends wanting to see how he was doing. To hear him describe it, it sounded like a real “Hail the Conquering Hero” moment. Also, all the kids in Holly’s class made him “Get Well Soon” cards. Most were very sweet, but a couple were rather morbid. One had a picture of a bleeding head, but my favorite one said “I’M SORRY YOU CRACT YOUR HEAD OPEN.”

He has written up his (rather terse) version of events on his website, along with a couple of post-stitch-up photos. Go to www.acesbase.com and look for the Dec. 5th news, or click on the photo above to see what he had to say.

For his cousin who is jealous of how photogenic Andrew has always been: This is your chance to see possibly the first “bad” photo ever taken of him. (You know who you are.)
