HAPPY NEW YEAR

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I guess it’s too late to wish you a Merry Christmas, but I’ve only missed the new year by a few weeks. Lots of new photos have been added to the gallery. I hope you enjoy the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Oklahoma New Year’s Eve galleries.

Also this page should load quicker now, because I moved lots of stuff off to the News Archives. I’ll try to only keep one year’s worth of entries on this main page. Don’t worry. All your old favorites, like Andrew’s head injury are still available for your morbid pleasure.

Finally, I guess I can answer my most frequently asked question.

Who is Gerry Misutka?

He is left-handed golfer, long-time pal, and one of the most frequent readers and staunchest supporters of this site. Several entries on the Advice page were created just for him. At a party recently, he complained that in all of his many visits to BruceArmstrong.net, he had not once seen any reference to himself. When I looked around the room and realized that most everyone else there had indeed been on the site (even if it was something embarrassing like the Failed Float Trip), I just had to devote a headline to Gerry. And now you know… the rest of the story.

Rad New Designs with my Nephew Cameron

My sister Chris and her 14 year-old son Cameron came down from Oklahoma for a visit this past weekend since they had Monday off for Martin Luther King Day. Lots of our time was spent making boomerangs with Cameron. This kid came up with some crazy new designs, and even though they may look like weapons of some sort, I’m happy to say that at the end of his visit, they were flying great. In case you’re thinking the 3-blader’s paint job looks too good to be true, you’re right. We scanned in the boomerang and then used Photoshop to try out paint jobs until we found one we liked. I forgot to get photos of the finished products, but next time I see Cameron, I’ll be sure to do so.

It was cold and rainy most of the weekend and to get to the workshop, we practically had to wade through a pond in my back yard. After a couple of days of this, we were dying to try out these new designs. Luckily Monday (the last day of Cameron’s stay) was a reasonably nice day. It was cold and windy, but at least the sun was out. I took the kids up to the field for a while and we were pleased to see that these radical new untested designs flew like champs. Thank goodness we didn’t have to work on them after testing, because due to time considerations, we had already painted them. Soon Holly was ready to go home, but Andrew and Cameron wanted to stay. I left them at the field alone for a while and they made great use of that practice time. Cameron has only thrown a few times, but he has caught on quickly, and later on Monday he was competing quite respectably in a few rounds of GLORP with Andrew and I.

Wireless Network

DI-624.jpg (32256 bytes)Wireless Network. The most recent upgrade in the computer arena has been a wireless network. I went with the 802.11g D-Link Xtreme G products because of an advertised speed doubling capability called “Super-G”. Supposedly it will allow a maximum transfer rate of 108mbps as opposed to 802.11g’s standard max rate of 54mbps. By using this with the HTPC, I was finally able to get rid of an Ethernet cable that had been lying in the floor for a year and a half. I have a PCI card in my HTPC and a PC-card in my laptop. In testing without Super-G, I can take the laptop to the farthest point in the house (4 walls away) and get 48mbps. I still need to do some more testing to see if the alleged speed-doubling really does anything, but either way, I got an excellent deal at buy.com, so even if I don’t use Super-G, this system was worth it.

Holly’s 9th Birthday

Holly’s 9th Birthday. Lots of relatives came over Saturday night to celebrate Holly’s 9th Birthday. Later in the week, she had another party with her friends at a glamorous makeover place in the mall called Libby Lu’s. As usual, we’ve got web galleries with lots of photos. 2003 USBA National Boomerang Expo in Houston

Though I flipped and flopped about whether to actually attend this thing, boy am I glad we went! We had planned to merely spectate, take part in workshops, and help out wherever we could, but on the night we arrived, I ran into tournament director Tony Brazelton, and he convinced Andrew, Holly, and me to sign up for the actual competitions. Andrew, or “Ace” as he was known by the other boomerangers, is now the National Champion of the both the Novice and Junior divisions. Holly won several silver medals, and I even managed to score a few medals myself in the Intermediate division. Check back soon for a longer write-up on this super-fun event, but for now enjoy the photo galleries. You may also be interested in these articles from the local Houston papers:

A Couple of New Lists

Cordata_CS40-2.jpg (39195 bytes)A Couple of New Lists. I was looking through a drawer and was astounded by just how many computer parts receipts were stuffed in there. After I pulled them out, I realized they dated back pretty far and decided to see how accurately I could list my computer purchases over the years. It’s not done yet, but it’s pretty close. I think this list could come in handy for some of you guys to show your wives and say, “See Honey? I don’t buy that much computer stuff.” Click here for the Armstrong Computer History.

In that same drawer, I found quite a few concert ticket stubs. My first thought was “Man, I used to have a lot of fun.” My second thought was “Hey, there’s another list I can make for Bruce’s Self-Indulgence Page.” This list has lots of missing dates and venues, and probably lots of missing concerts, but I’ve put out the call to friends to help me fill in the blanks. Click here for my Concert List.
