Aside from the fact that Dallas radio absolutely stinks (unless you&#8217;re a country fan, I guess), I almost never listen anyway. My most frequent radio-listening spot used to be in the car on the way to work, but since I almost always work from home, that no longer happens. And forget MTV for music.<\/p>\n<p>The new music I&#8217;ve been turned on to for the last couple of years has come from two places: Video games and Saturday Night Live. Back in 2000, <a title=\"View product details at Amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?tag=brucearmstron-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%253fASIN=B00005NZ1S%2526tag=brucearmstron-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=\/o\/ASIN\/B00005NZ1S%25253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82\" target=\"_amazon\">Tony Hawk&#8217;s Pro Skater 2<\/a> set the standard with what I think is still the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Hawk's_Pro_Skater_2#Soundtrack\" target=\"_amazon\">best soundtrack ever for a video game<\/a>. Since then, I&#8217;ve discovered lots of new artists via video games. These days, racing games like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB0002IQC8Y%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143143284%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8%26v%3Dglance\" target=\"_amazon\">Burnout 3<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000930DLE%2Fqid%3D1143143352%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_unbuck_2%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dvideogames%26n%3D1000\" target=\"_amazon\">Burnout: Revenge<\/a> have turned me on to the following artists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0001ZMWQO%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143143546%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\" target=\"_amazon\"><strong>Franz Ferdinand<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; There are at least 3 excellent songs on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0001ZMWQO%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143143546%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\" target=\"_amazon\">self-titled CD<\/a>, and several other good ones.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0001BRONE%2Fsr%3D8-1%2Fqid%3D1143143798%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_1%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\"><strong>The Von Bondies<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Maybe a one-hit wonder, but man, I sure dig that hit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0001BS2T4%2Fsr%3D8-3%2Fqid%3D1143143798%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_3%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\">C&#8217;Mon C&#8217;Mon<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB00025ETIW%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143143941%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\"><strong>My Chemical Romance<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; &#8220;I&#8217;m Not Okay&#8221; is the song that was actually in the game. &#8220;Ghost of You&#8221; is a better song, and has an <em>excellent<\/em> video.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB00009IB53%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143144277%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\"><strong>Motion City Soundtrack<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I liked about 2\/3 of &#8220;My Favorite Accident&#8221; on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB0002IQC8Y%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143143284%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8%26v%3Dglance\" target=\"_amazon\">Burnout 3<\/a>, but &#8220;The Future Freaks Me Out&#8221; is fun all the way through.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB0009PLM4O%2Fqid%3D1143144469%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\"><strong>CKY<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I already knew about &#8220;Camp Kill Yourself&#8221; via Bam Margera and his Jackass theme &#8220;Quiet Bitter Being&#8221;. When I heard &#8220;As The Tables Turn&#8221; on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000930DLE%2Fqid%3D1143143352%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_unbuck_2%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dvideogames%26n%3D1000\" target=\"_amazon\">Burnout: Revenge<\/a>, I listened to it 5 times in a row.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More recently, several of SNL&#8217;s musical guests have caught my attention. Here&#8217;s a list from this season:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0001ZMWQO%2Fsr%3D8-2%2Fqid%3D1143143546%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\" target=\"_amazon\"><strong>Franz Ferdinand<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I was already a fan and it was neat to see them live.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=external-search%3Fsearch-type=ss%26index=music%26keyword=korn\"><strong>Korn<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Interesting performance (and interesting microphone stand), but it didn&#8217;t actually make me seek out any of their new music.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=external-search%3Fsearch-type=ss%26index=music%26keyword=James%20Blunt\"><strong>James Blunt<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Pretty good. I guess I can see what the hype is about.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=external-search%3Fsearch-type=ss%26index=music%26keyword=Shakira\"><strong>Shakira<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Holy Smokes! I&#8217;ll just keep quiet in case Michelle reads this.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000AADYRQ%2Fqid%3D1143158514%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\"><strong>Death Cab For Cutie<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; These guys came out of nowhere from my perspective (I&#8217;ve since learned they&#8217;ve been around forever). Their album &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000AADYRQ%2Fqid%3D1143158514%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\">Plans<\/a>&#8221; went straight onto my Top 10 list. 10 of the 11 songs on that CD are great. It is safe to say that I am a super-fan of these guys.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000E97HIA%2Fqid%3D1143158404%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\"><strong>Prince<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Obviously not a new artist, but his performance of his new song &#8220;Fury&#8221; blew me away. I&#8217;d forgotten what a guitar wizard he is. I can&#8217;t bring myself to delete this episode from my PVR because I watch that one song so often.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000929AU0%2Fqid%3D1143159022%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\"><strong>Fall Out Boy<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Holly and Andrew had already turned me on to these guys&#8217; hits &#8220;Sugar We&#8217;re Going Down&#8221; and &#8220;Dance, Dance&#8221;. This is a fun band and I think they&#8217;d be pretty good live, but it seemed like they were having technical difficulties (audio levels) on the show.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000E1155E%2Fqid%3D1143159127%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\" target=\"_amazon\"><strong>Arctic Monkeys<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;d never heard of them before they were announced as SNL musical guests. Now I&#8217;ve listened to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000E1155E%2Fqid%3D1143159127%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic\" target=\"_amazon\">Whatever People Say I Am, That&#8217;s What I Am Not<\/a>&#8221; over and over again.\u00a0By far the coolest bass grooves I&#8217;ve heard in a while! These guys have knocked DCFC off the top of my &#8220;currently playing&#8221; list. Back to SNL: At first I didn&#8217;t know if I&#8217;d fast-forward past their\u00a0songs\u00a0or not. The first song &#8220;I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor&#8221; held my attention, then their second song &#8220;A Certain Romance&#8221; knocked my socks off and got stuck in my head for a solid week. This performance was notable also because at one point the lead singer pointed at someone in the audience and shouted &#8220;That man just yawned!&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;q=%22That+man+just+yawned%22\" target=\"_amazon\">Google that<\/a> to see what kind of Internet reaction it caused.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I should also mention the oddest place I&#8217;ve found a new song lately: An Olympic figure skater&#8217;s performace music. A Japanese skater skated to a song so mesmerizing that I had to seek it out. It was incredibly tough to find. We thought it seemed like something out of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=external-search%3Fsearch-type=ss%26index=dvd%26keyword=Miyazaki\">Miyazaki movie<\/a>, but I finally learned that it was from a 1983 Japanese war movie called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&amp;tag=brucearmstron-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;path=external-search%3Fsearch-type=ss%26index=blended%26keyword=Merry%20Christmas%20Mr.%20Lawrence\" target=\"_amazon\">Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence<\/a>.&#8221; I found a surprisingly good MIDI version you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brucearmstrong.net\/MERRY_CH_mid.mid\">listen to by clicking here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do I learn about new music these days?
